Steven Appleby

For many years STEVEN APPLEBY created, wrote and drew surreal yet personal comic strips for many newspapers including: New Musical Express, Guardian, The Times, Die Zeit, and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. He looks at the world and wonders ‘what’s going on? What on earth is life really all about?’ Then he plays about with what he sees, turns it upside down and sideways and reimagines it. On a good day he ends up with a drawing that is utterly untrue and yet feels truer than the truth and, somehow, says something about the absurdities and complexities of life.

Steven has also written and drawn around 30 books; exhibited prints and paintings in many solo exhibitions and seen his secret world adapted for the stage as the musical play Crocs in Frocks. He has also written a comedy series for BBC Radio 4 and had his character Captain Star animated for television. His debut graphic novel, DRAGMAN, was awarded the PRIX SPÉCIAL DU JURY at the International Angoulême Comic Festival, France, 2021 and the MAX UND MORTIZ PRIZ for Best International Comic Book at the Erlangen Comic Salon, Germany, 2022. It was also shortlisted for an Eisner Award.

He has lived as a trans person since 2008.

All special guests will appear at our comic convention on 16 & 17 November 2024.
