Comics & Mental Health // Live Event // 1800

Weds 11 Nov, Room 2 at The Carriageworks Theatre, The Electric Press, 3 Millennium Square, Leeds, LS2 3AD, 18:00-19:30, 16+, FREE

Is there something about comics and graphic novels that make them particularly effective when telling stories about people with mental health difficulties? That’s one of the questions that will be discussed at this special event, presented in partnership with Arts & Minds.

Two artists will discuss their books, you will have a chance to share your thoughts and there will be an opportunity to share work and meet like-minded people. Elaine Will is a cartoonist and illustrator from the wilds of Canada. She holds a BA in Illustration from The Arts University College at Bournemouth in the UK and has recently been awarded the Xeric Award for her original mental illness drama Look Straight Ahead.

Darryl Cunningham is a Yorkshire based cartoonist, author of many books, most recently Supercrash. His book Psychiatric Tales was partly inspired by his years spent working as a health care assistant on an acute psychiatric ward, as well as his own experience with acute depression.

The event will be hosted by Tom Bailey, who helps run Arts & Minds, a Leeds network of people interested in creativity and mental health. Tom is also a freelance illustrator.

Please bring your own work if you wish to share it, and there will be a selection of books and comics related to the issue of mental health to browse, kindly donated by Travelling Man Stores.

The last 15 years has seen a boom in the UK graphic arts and illustration industry, with a DIY scene emerging and prospering alongside new and affordable leaps in technology.

So much of our lives is now spent in the virtual digital realm, so what will become of the tactile objects we all hold so dear? Will we see books disappear in our lifetime? And why are more and more creatives moving away from the computer and getting back to using their hands to create art, both commercially and for art’s sake.

Made You Look is a documentary which sets out to explore the landscape of the commercial arts in the 21st Century. It’s a film that gives an insight into how modern creative people feel about the challenges and triumphs of living in a hyper digital age.
