Comics Central

As part of this year’s wider festival programme, we’re delighted to announce that we’ve been awarded funding from Arts Council England, and we want YOU to get involved with our new creative comics project!

2017 sees our convention taking place in Leeds City Centre for the first time since Thought Bubble started, back in 2007. As part of our return to the centre, we’ll be building our very own bespoke festival village, which will include three massive marquees on Millennium Square, Cookridge Street and outside Leeds Town Hall. These marquees will be chock-a-block with comic artists and writers from all over the world, but we have to admit that their walls will be quite plain looking.

That’s where Comics Central comes in!

This summer we are giving hundreds of young people the chance to participate in free workshops to create comic book inspired artworks which will be blown up in scale and used to dress the entire festival site. From massive banners and posters to flags and signs, our Thought Bubble festival village will be covered in colourful comics creations made by you.

We have also invited six international creators to make a single panel of comic book artwork that will be exhibited large-scale with these workshop artworks! These artists are:

Warwick Johnson-Cadwell, James Stokoe, Ricardo Bessa, Katie Skelly, Rachael Smith, and Abby Bulmer.

Each artist has been selected especially to inspire young participants with various comics techniques, they will all be attending the Thought Bubble Convention – which is free to attend for under 12s – so budding comic artists can come along and meet professional creators too!

Workshops will be held in a variety of venues across Leeds including:

22/23rd July : Leeds Corn Exchange as part of Child Friendly Leeds’ Birthday Bonanza.

3/10/17th August : Leeds City Museum.

More workshops TBC – keep an eye on our social media or email bess@thoughtbubblefestival.com for more information!
